What does BIM actually stand for, and is it a piece of software?
BIM stands for Building Information Modelling (or Modeling). It is not a single software product; it is a way of working in which a project or asset is described by a shared digital information model made of objects that carry geometry and data. Tools such as Revit, Archicad or Tekla are used to author models, but BIM itself is the process of producing, sharing and managing that information across the project team and the life of the asset. ISO 19650-1 frames it as information management using building information modelling.

What is the difference between a 3D CAD model and a BIM model?
A 3D CAD model is geometry: lines, surfaces and solids that look like a building. A BIM model is made of typed objects (walls, doors, pipes, beams) that know what they are and carry properties such as material, fire rating, manufacturer, cost code or phase. Because the objects are semantic, the model can be queried, scheduled, checked for clashes, exported to IFC and reused for quantities, programme and facilities management. The geometry is only one view of the information.

What is an information model in ISO 19650 terms?
In ISO 19650-1 an information model is the set of structured and unstructured information containers about an asset or project: geometrical models, schedules, databases, documents and drawings taken together. During delivery it is called the project information model (PIM) and during operation the asset information model (AIM). Calling it an information model rather than a BIM model reminds teams that documents and data count as much as 3D geometry.

What is a federated model?
A federated model is an assembly of separate discipline models (architecture, structure, MEP, civil) linked or overlaid together for coordination without merging them into one file. Each author keeps ownership and responsibility for its own model, and the federation is used for clash detection, visual review and progress checks. ISO 19650 assumes federation: information containers are produced by task teams and combined at the lead appointed party or client level.

Where did the term BIM come from and when did it become mainstream?
The concept of a building description system and a building product model was researched from the 1970s and 1980s, and the phrase building information model appeared in the early 1990s. The term BIM was popularised in the early 2000s, notably by Autodesk after it acquired Revit in 2002 and through analyst Jerry Laiserin's writing. The IFC schema (first released 1996) and the UK Government's 2011 announcement of a 2016 BIM Level 2 requirement pushed it from a technology topic into mainstream policy and procurement.

What was the UK BIM Level 2 mandate and why does everyone still mention it?
In June 2011 the UK Government Construction Strategy required collaborative 3D BIM, with all project and asset information in electronic form, on centrally procured public projects by 2016. Level 2 was defined by the Bew-Richards maturity wedge and specified in documents such as PAS 1192-2:2013, BS 1192:2007 and BS 1192-4:2014. It was the first large-scale national requirement of its kind, and its documents were later internationalised as the ISO 19650 series, which is why so much global vocabulary (EIR, BEP, CDE) comes from it. The level terminology itself is now legacy in the UK.

What is the ISO 19650 series and how many parts does it have?
ISO 19650 is the international standard for managing information over the whole life cycle of a built asset using BIM. As of 2026 it has six published parts: Part 1 concepts and principles (2018), Part 2 delivery phase (2018), Part 3 operational phase (2020), Part 4 information exchange (2022), Part 5 security-minded approach (2020) and Part 6 health and safety information (2025). Parts 1 to 3 are being revised; draft international standards were in circulation in 2026 under the shorter title Information management.

What is openBIM?
openBIM is the approach promoted by buildingSMART International in which project information is exchanged using open, vendor-neutral standards so that any compliant software can read it. Its core standards are IFC for model data (ISO 16739-1), BCF for issues, IDS for machine-readable requirements, bSDD for shared definitions and IDM/MVD for describing exchanges. The aim is that the client, not a software vendor, controls the long-term accessibility of asset information.

What is IFC and why does it matter?
IFC (Industry Foundation Classes) is the open data schema for describing buildings and infrastructure, maintained by buildingSMART and published as ISO 16739-1. An IFC file (.ifc) contains objects such as IfcWall or IfcPipeSegment with geometry, properties, classifications and relationships, independent of the authoring tool. It matters because it lets different disciplines and software exchange models, lets clients receive data they can still read in 20 years, and is the format regulators such as Singapore's CORENET X (IFC-SG) and many public clients require.

What is a common data environment (CDE)?
A CDE is the agreed source of information for a project or asset, used to collect, manage and share every information container through a managed process. ISO 19650-1 describes it as both a solution (the platform) and a workflow with four states: work in progress, shared, published and archive, with each container carrying a revision, status code and classification. The workflow concept came from BS 1192:2007. Platforms such as Autodesk Construction Cloud, Trimble Connect, Aconex or Dalux implement it, but a CDE can also be a well-governed set of folders.

What is a BIM Execution Plan (BEP)?
A BEP is the document in which the delivery team explains how it will meet the client's information requirements: roles and responsibilities, software and versions, federation strategy, model origin and units, naming conventions, level of information need per milestone and the CDE workflow. ISO 19650-2 distinguishes a pre-appointment BEP submitted with the tender from the confirmed BEP agreed after appointment. It is complemented by the master and task information delivery plans (MIDP and TIDP) that schedule the deliverables.

What is the difference between OIR, AIR, PIR and EIR?
ISO 19650-1 defines a hierarchy of information requirements. Organisational information requirements (OIR) state what the owner needs to run its business; asset information requirements (AIR) state what is needed to operate and maintain the asset; project information requirements (PIR) state what the client needs from a project to make decisions; and exchange information requirements (EIR) turn these into the specific deliverables, formats and levels of information need that appointed parties must provide at each exchange. EIR is the document tenderers respond to with their BEP.

What does a BIM Coordinator do day to day?
A BIM Coordinator makes sure the models from different disciplines fit together and meet the BEP. Typical tasks are checking incoming models against naming, origin and classification rules, federating them, running clash detection and model checks, issuing and tracking issues in BCF, chairing coordination meetings and preparing models for information exchanges. On larger projects there is often a coordinator per discipline reporting to a BIM Manager or the lead appointed party's information manager.

Is a BIM Manager the same as an Information Manager?
No. The Information Manager, a role defined in the UK CIC BIM Protocol and PAS 1192-2, is a procedural gatekeeper: it establishes and polices the common data environment, sets information standards and output formats, and manages change control, but has no design or clash-detection duties. The BIM Manager (sometimes called VDC Manager) implements and manages BIM across design, construction and handover, including tools, training and organisational change. ISO 19650 avoids both job titles and instead describes an information management function that each party must resource.

What do LOD 100, 200, 300, 350 and 400 mean?
They are Level of Development grades from the AIA and the BIMForum LOD Specification describing how reliable a model element is. LOD 100 is a conceptual placeholder or symbol; LOD 200 is a generic object with approximate size, shape and location; LOD 300 has accurate geometry, quantity, size, shape, location and orientation; LOD 350 adds the interfaces and connections with other systems needed for coordination; LOD 400 has fabrication and installation detail. LOD 500 refers to a field-verified representation and is not elaborated in the specification. The current edition of the specification is 2025 and it is free.

What are 4D, 5D, 6D and 7D BIM?
The dimensions are shorthand for the type of information linked to a 3D model. 4D links model elements to the construction programme so the build sequence can be simulated; 5D links them to quantities and cost; 6D is commonly used for facilities management and operational data; 7D is used by some for sustainability and by others for sensor and analytics data. Only 3D, 4D and 5D have wide agreement, so it is safer to state the actual purpose and information requirement, as ISO 19650 does, than to rely on a dimension label.

What were BIM Levels 0, 1, 2 and 3?
They come from the 2008 Bew-Richards maturity wedge used in the UK. Level 0 is unmanaged 2D CAD; Level 1 is managed CAD in 2D or 3D with standard structures and formats but no shared models (lonely BIM); Level 2 is managed 3D discipline models with attached data, federated and exchanged through a common data environment; Level 3 is a single collaborative online model with life-cycle data (iBIM). The UK required Level 2 from 2016. The terminology has been superseded by the ISO 19650 series and the IMI Framework, though it is still used informally worldwide.

What is a classification system and why do BIM objects need one?
A classification system is an agreed set of codes and names for things in the built environment, so that a wall, a space or an activity is identified the same way by every party and every software. In BIM each object carries a classification code (for example a Uniclass Ss or Pr code, or an OmniClass table code) that lets models be filtered, scheduled, costed and matched to specifications automatically. ISO 12006-2 defines the framework; Uniclass (UK), OmniClass (North America) and national systems implement it.

I am an architecture graduate. What is the usual entry route into BIM roles?
Most people start as a BIM Modeler or Technician in a design practice or contractor, producing discipline models and drawings to the project standards, then move to BIM Coordinator once they can federate models, run checks and manage issues. From there the paths split into BIM Manager or VDC Manager (implementation and teams), Information Manager (process and CDE governance, often client side) and specialist roles such as digital twin or data manager. Who are the appointing party, lead appointed party and appointed party in ISO 19650?
The appointing party is the organisation that receives information from the delivery team, usually the client or asset owner. A lead appointed party is an organisation appointed directly by the appointing party that coordinates a delivery team, for example a design consultant or main contractor. Appointed parties are organisations appointed by a lead appointed party, such as subconsultants and subcontractors, organised into task teams. The terms describe positions in the appointment chain, so the same company can be a lead appointed party on one project and an appointed party on another.

What are the eight stages of the ISO 19650-2 information management process?
ISO 19650-2 clause 5 sets out: 5.1 assessment and need (the appointing party establishes requirements, standards and the CDE), 5.2 invitation to tender, 5.3 tender response (pre-appointment BEP, capability assessment, mobilisation plan), 5.4 appointment (confirmed BEP, detailed responsibility matrix, MIDP), 5.5 mobilisation (testing methods, systems and people), 5.6 collaborative production of information, 5.7 information model delivery (review, authorisation and acceptance) and 5.8 project close-out (archiving and lessons learned). What do the CDE status codes S0, S1, S2, A1 and CR mean?
These suitability codes originate in BS 1192 and are now defined in the UK National Annex to BS EN ISO 19650-2. S0 is work in progress (initial status), S1 is shared for coordination, S2 for information, S3 for review and comment, S4 for stage approval and S5 for manufacture or construction; A-codes (A1 to An) are published authorised and accepted deliverables per stage; B-codes are partial sign-off with comments; CR is an as-constructed record. How should information containers be named on an ISO 19650 project?
ISO 19650-2 requires the appointing party to set an information container ID convention in the project information standard, and the UK National Annex gives the most used one: Project-Originator-Volume/System-Level/Location-Type-Role-Number (for example PRJ-ABC-ZZ-01-M3-A-0001), with revision and status held as metadata. Each field is drawn from an agreed code list, and the same codes are used to classify and filter containers in the CDE. Other countries define their own conventions, for example in national BIM guides, so the principle is a fixed, machine-readable pattern that is documented before production starts.

What is the difference between a pre-appointment BEP and a confirmed BEP?
The pre-appointment BEP is submitted by a prospective lead appointed party with its tender to show how it proposes to meet the EIR; it includes the proposed information delivery strategy, team capability and capacity, mobilisation plan and a risk register. After the appointment, the lead appointed party works with its appointed parties to confirm the BEP, adding the detailed responsibility matrix, the agreed standards and methods, the task information delivery plans and the master information delivery plan. Only the confirmed BEP is contractual.

What are the MIDP and TIDP?
A task information delivery plan (TIDP) is prepared by each task team and lists its information containers with responsible authors, level of information need and due dates for each milestone. The master information delivery plan (MIDP) is compiled by the lead appointed party from all TIDPs and gives the appointing party one schedule of what will be delivered when, across the whole delivery team. Both are living documents attached to the BEP and updated as the programme changes.

What is level of information need and how do I write one?
Level of information need, defined in ISO 7817-1:2024 (formerly EN 17412-1:2020), is the framework for stating the extent and granularity of information for a deliverable. You define the purpose, the milestone, the actor who needs it and the object breakdown, then specify three things: geometrical information (detail, dimensionality, location, appearance, parametric behaviour), alphanumerical information (identification and properties) and documentation. Written this way the requirement can be checked, for example with an IDS file, instead of relying on a single LOD number.

Which IFC version should I use: IFC2x3 or IFC4?
IFC2x3 TC1 (2007) is still the most widely implemented version and is the safe choice for basic architectural and MEP coordination with older tools. IFC4 (2013, ISO 16739-1:2018) added better geometry, property sets and quantities, and IFC 4.3 ADD2 (ISO 16739-1:2024) added roads, rail, bridges, ports and waterways. Use IFC4 or 4.3 when the exchange requires the new entities or when all receiving tools support it, and always state the version and model view definition in the BEP. Test the export early with the actual receiving software rather than assuming compatibility.

What is a Model View Definition (MVD)?
An MVD is a defined subset of the IFC schema that supports a particular exchange, for example the IFC2x3 Coordination View or the IFC4 Reference View for geometry-based coordination and the IFC4 Design Transfer View for editable exchange. Software is certified against an MVD, and exporting to the wrong view is a common cause of missing data. MVDs are derived from Information Delivery Manuals (ISO 29481) and are increasingly complemented by IDS files that state project-specific requirements.

What is BCF and how is it used in coordination?
BCF (BIM Collaboration Format) is the buildingSMART standard for exchanging issues about a model without exchanging the model. Each topic holds a title, status, priority, assignee, due date, comments, camera viewpoints with snapshots and the GUIDs of the affected IFC elements. A coordinator exports clashes or review comments as a .bcfzip file (BCF 2.1 or 3.0) or synchronises them through the BCF API to an issue-tracking platform, and each discipline opens the issue directly in its authoring tool at the right view. BCF 3.0 is the current version.

What is COBie and when is it required?
COBie (Construction Operations Building information exchange) is a structured way of handing over managed asset information: spaces, zones, types, components, systems, documents, warranties and spares, usually presented as a multi-sheet spreadsheet but also expressible as IFC. It was created at the US Army Corps of Engineers in 2007 and is published within NBIMS-US (V4 includes COBie Version 3). It is required whenever the client's exchange information requirements say so; in the UK it was formalised in BS 1192-4:2014, which BSI withdrew in 2022, but many clients still specify COBie drops at design and handover milestones.

Uniclass or OmniClass: which should I use?
Use the one your client or region requires. Uniclass, published by NBS, is the UK system mandated through the IMI Framework and is free; its main tables for models are Ss (systems), Pr (products), EF (elements/functions) and SL (spaces/locations). OmniClass, from CSI, is the North American system with tables numbered 11 to 49 that incorporate MasterFormat (Table 22) and UniFormat (Table 21); access is now through CSI's licensed platform. Both follow ISO 12006-2, so the concepts map, but codes do not translate one to one, so agree a single system in the project information standard.

What is the difference between MasterFormat and UniFormat?
MasterFormat organises work results, essentially specification sections, into 50 divisions (since 2004) such as Division 03 Concrete or Division 23 HVAC; it is the standard for specifications and cost data in the US and Canada, with 2020 as the latest full edition. UniFormat organises a building by functional elements such as substructure, shell, interiors and services regardless of the trade that builds them, which suits early-stage cost plans and model breakdowns; the CSI/CSC edition is 2010. What is a VDC Engineer and how is it different from a BIM Coordinator?
VDC (Virtual Design and Construction) is the contractor-side term for using models to plan and manage construction. A VDC Engineer typically builds and maintains construction models, links them to the programme (4D) and to quantities and cost (5D), prepares constructability and logistics reviews, coordinates trade models and supports site teams with model-based layout and progress tracking. A BIM Coordinator focuses on model quality, federation and clash resolution during design and construction coordination. The titles overlap, and some companies use VDC Manager as a synonym for BIM Manager.

Which countries currently mandate BIM on public projects?
Mandates take different forms. The UK has required ISO 19650-based information management on central government projects since the 2016 Level 2 mandate. Singapore requires BIM regulatory submissions in IFC-SG through CORENET X, mandatory for new projects of 30,000 m2 or more from October 2025 and 5,000 m2 or more from October 2026. Germany requires BIM on federal transport infrastructure since the end of 2020 under the Stufenplan. Spain phases mandatory BIM into state procurement from April 2024 to 2030. Dubai Municipality has required BIM for large buildings since 2014. Italy, France, the Nordic countries and several US and Australian states have their own requirements, while Mexico and Saudi Arabia have strategies or client-specific standards rather than a national legal mandate.

What is the EU BIM Task Group handbook and who is it for?
The Handbook for the Introduction of BIM by the European Public Sector was published in 2017 by the EU BIM Task Group, a network of public-sector representatives from European countries with the European Commission on its steering committee. It is written for public clients and policy makers and gives a common framework: strategic drivers, public leadership, a common technical framework based on open standards, and a capability-building roadmap. Which certifications test BIM standards knowledge rather than software skills?
The buildingSMART Professional Certification is the main vendor-neutral one: the Foundation level tests knowledge of BIM terminology, the ISO 19650 series, EIR/BEP/CDE, openBIM standards (IFC, MVD, IDS, BCF) and owner-operator information management, with an optional national module, and the Practitioner level adds applied competence. BSI and other certification bodies offer ISO 19650 training and organisational certification (for example BSI Kitemark for BIM). Software vendors' certifications (Autodesk, Graphisoft, Trimble) test tool skills instead, so a mix of one standards certificate and one tool certificate is a common goal.

A BIM use is a defined purpose for which information is produced or used, such as design authoring, 3D coordination, 4D sequencing, quantity take-off, energy analysis, code checking, asset management or record modelling. How do the information requirements flow down through an ISO 19650 appointment chain?
The appointing party issues its EIR, project information standard and production methods with the tender for each lead appointed party. Each lead appointed party responds with a BEP and, once appointed, must pass the relevant requirements down to its own appointed parties in their appointments, so that every task team knows what to deliver, in which format and to which level of information need. Each level also aggregates upward: task teams produce TIDPs, the lead appointed party compiles the MIDP and reviews information before it is shared with the appointing party. Contracts at every tier should therefore reference the same information standard and CDE workflow.

What does ISO 19650-3 change for a client who already runs ISO 19650-2 projects?
Part 3 shifts the focus from a project to the whole life of the asset. The client has to define organisational and asset information requirements, maintain an asset information model that stays accurate after handover, and treat operational activities (maintenance, refurbishment, disposal, incidents) as trigger events that generate information requirements and appointments in the same way a project does. Project information from Part 2 becomes an input to the AIM, so the delivery-phase EIR must be derived from the AIR, and the CDE has to continue into operation instead of being closed at project close-out.

What is a security-minded approach under ISO 19650-5 and when does it apply?
ISO 19650-5 asks the asset owner to run a sensitivity assessment (security triage) to decide whether the asset, its location, its users or its information could be exploited to cause harm. If the triage says security-minded treatment is needed, the owner produces a security strategy, a security management plan, an information security management plan and a breach/incident plan, and applies proportionate controls to people, process, technology and physical access. It applies to any digitally managed asset information, not only BIM, and it replaced PAS 1192-5:2015 in 2020.

What is IDS and how does it relate to EIR and IFC?
Information Delivery Specification (IDS) is the buildingSMART standard, approved as version 1.0 in June 2024, for writing information requirements as an XML file that software can check against an IFC model. Each specification has an applicability part (which entities, classifications or property values it applies to) and a requirements part (which attributes, properties, classifications, materials or relationships must be present and with what values). Clients embed IDS files in their EIR, authors validate before sharing, and CDE or checking tools report pass or fail per element, which makes the EIR testable instead of a prose document.

How do ISO 12006-3, ISO 23386, ISO 23387 and the bSDD fit together?
ISO 12006-3 is the framework for object-oriented data dictionaries; ISO 23386 defines how a property must be described and governed (name, definition, data type, unit, status, authorship); and ISO 23387 defines data templates, reusable sets of those properties for a type of object such as a door or pump. The buildingSMART Data Dictionary (bSDD) is the online service that implements the framework and hosts classifications, properties and templates with stable URIs. Together they let a manufacturer, a client and a software tool refer to exactly the same property definition, which is what makes IDS checks and product data exchange reliable.

What is an Information Delivery Manual (IDM) under ISO 29481?
An IDM documents a business process and the information exchanges it needs: a process map showing actors and activities, exchange requirements describing the information each exchange must carry, and functional parts mapping those requirements to IFC concepts. ISO 29481-1 (methodology and format, 2025 edition) and 29481-2 (interaction framework, 2025 edition) describe how to write one, and 29481-3 (2022) gives an XML schema (idmXML) so IDMs can be stored and processed by software. IDMs are the source for Model View Definitions and, increasingly, for IDS files.

Can I use LOD in an ISO 19650 project, or must I use level of information need?
You can use LOD as a vocabulary for geometric reliability, but ISO 19650 expects the appointing party to state the level of information need, which covers geometry, alphanumerical information and documentation for a stated purpose and milestone. A practical approach is to specify geometrical information with reference to LOD definitions from the BIMForum specification or the NZ BIM Handbook where the team already understands them, and to specify properties and documents separately, ideally as an IDS file. Avoid using a single LOD number to imply data content; that is the ambiguity ISO 7817-1 was written to remove.

What checks should happen before an information container moves from work in progress to shared?
ISO 19650-2 requires each task team to check its containers against the project information standard and BEP before sharing. Typical checks are: file and container naming, correct origin and coordinates, units, classification codes, required properties present (an IDS check), geometry and duplicates, no unresolved internal clashes, correct IFC export settings and model view, and suitability code and revision set. The lead appointed party then reviews shared containers before authorising them for the appointing party. Recording the check results in the CDE gives the audit trail ISO 19650-4 expects.

Why do properties get lost when exporting to IFC, and how do I prevent it?
Common causes are exporting to a model view that does not carry the property (for example a coordination view when a design transfer view is needed), properties held in vendor-specific parameters that are not mapped to IFC property sets, incorrect IFC class mapping so the object exports as IfcBuildingElementProxy, and elements excluded by phase, view or category filters. Prevent it by agreeing the IFC version and MVD in the BEP, using a property mapping file or shared parameter set aligned to standard Psets or a bSDD dictionary, assigning IFC classes explicitly in the model, and validating the export with an IDS check before sharing.

Who performs the information management function on the client side if the client has no BIM staff?
ISO 19650-2 allows the appointing party to appoint a third party to undertake its information management function, and this is common: a consultant acts as client-side information manager to write the EIR and information standard, set up the CDE, assess tenders, and review and accept delivered information. The responsibility stays with the appointing party, so the arrangement and its scope should be written into the appointment, and the same organisation should not be both the reviewer and a producer of the same information to avoid conflicts. In the UK the CIC Information Manager scope of services is the usual reference.

What do I need to know to submit a project in Singapore under CORENET X?
CORENET X replaces CORENET 2.0 with a single portal in which all regulatory agencies review one coordinated model at Design, Construction and Completion gateways, with an optional pre-submission consultation. Models must be prepared to the IFC-SG modelling requirements and the CORENET X Code of Practice. Submission is mandatory for new projects with GFA of 30,000 m2 or more since 1 October 2025 and for 5,000 m2 or more from 1 October 2026, with ongoing projects onboarded from 1 October 2027; smaller projects can still use CORENET 2 voluntarily. BCA offers assisted onboarding and updates the plan by circular.

How does Spain's Plan BIM en la Contratacion Publica work?
The plan was approved by the Council of Ministers on 27 June 2023 and published in the BOE on 20 July 2023. From 1 April 2024, state contracting bodies must require BIM in construction-related contracts for owned assets, phased up to 2030 according to the estimated contract value, with the thresholds updated in line with EU procurement thresholds (for example the 5,404 million euro band applying from 1 January 2026). Requirements are expressed as five BIM levels (preBIM, inicial, medio, avanzado, integrado) in a levels table covering strategy, processes, technology and people. The Interministerial BIM Commission (CIBIM) publishes guidance and a self-assessment tool.

What are the BIM requirements for federal projects in Germany?
The Stufenplan Digitales Planen und Bauen (December 2015) defined performance levels, and since the end of 2020 Level 1 (defined BIM deliverables, IFC-based exchange, a CDE and client information requirements called AIA with a BIM execution plan called BAP) applies to all newly planned federal transport infrastructure. Sector masterplans for federal roads, rail and waterways (2021) and the Masterplan BIM fuer Bundesbauten for civil and military federal buildings (December 2021) extend it, with federal trunk-road requirements from 2025. BIM Deutschland, run by the building, transport and defence ministries, publishes templates and the free BIM-Portal des Bundes and released a template AIA for federal buildings in August 2026.

How should classification be applied inside models so it survives IFC export?
Assign the classification as an IfcClassificationReference linked to the element, not only as a free-text parameter, so it exports as a proper classification with the system name (for example Uniclass 2015 or OmniClass) and code. Most authoring tools map a designated parameter to IFC classification on export; agree that parameter in the BEP and populate it at the type level where possible. Where a classification is published in the bSDD, reference the dictionary URI so the receiving tool can resolve the code. Validate with an IDS rule that requires the classification system and a code pattern per entity.

Which UK BIM Level 2 documents were replaced by which ISO 19650 parts?
BS 1192:2007+A2:2016 and PAS 1192-2:2013 were withdrawn in January 2019 when BS EN ISO 19650-1 and -2 were published; PAS 1192-3:2014 was replaced by BS EN ISO 19650-3:2020; PAS 1192-5:2015 was withdrawn in July 2020 in favour of BS EN ISO 19650-5:2020; and PAS 1192-6:2018 now has an international counterpart in ISO 19650-6:2025. BS 1192-4:2014 (COBie) was withdrawn by BSI in September 2022 without a direct ISO replacement, with ISO 19650-4:2022 covering information exchange generally. The UK BIM Framework, launched in October 2019 to host this transition, became the IMI Framework in May 2025.

How should a multinational organisation structure its corporate BIM standard to work with ISO 19650 in several countries?
Keep one corporate information standard aligned to ISO 19650-1 and -2 vocabulary and process, and treat national differences as annexes: the UK National Annex naming and status codes, German AIA/BAP terminology, Spanish Plan BIM levels, Singapore IFC-SG requirements, and so on. Define your own default level of information need and IDS libraries per asset type, mapped to each client classification (Uniclass, OmniClass, national systems) through a maintained crosswalk. Use ISO 12911 as a checklist of what a BIM specification should contain, and ISO 19650-5 to define which projects need security-minded handling. Version the standard, publish templates for EIR responses and BEPs, and audit projects against it.

How can information exchange under ISO 19650-4 be automated in a CDE?
ISO 19650-4 defines each exchange as a transaction with a checked information container, a review and an accept or reject outcome. In practice this is automated by configuring the CDE so that a container cannot change state until automated checks pass: metadata and naming validation on upload, IFC schema and MVD validation, IDS rule checks against the EIR, clash or model-check reports, and document checks. Results are stored with the container as evidence, rejections generate BCF issues or comments returned to the task team, and acceptance triggers the state change to published. Open APIs (BCF API, openCDE Documents API) allow these steps to connect authoring, checking and CDE tools.

What is ISO 21597 (ICDD) and when would I use it instead of a plain zip or a CDE folder?
ISO 21597-1 defines an Information Container for linked Document Delivery: a zip package with an index file that lists every document and model and an RDF-based link set that describes how their contents relate (for example a room in a model linked to a clause in a specification), with ISO 21597-2 providing typed links. It is useful when a deliverable must remain interpretable outside the CDE, for example a contractual handover to an owner, archiving for a public authority, or transferring linked data between organisations that run different platforms. For routine daily exchange the CDE with its metadata is enough; ICDD is a formal, long-lived package.

What changes with IFC 4.3 for infrastructure projects and what should a rail or road client require?
IFC 4.3 ADD2, published as ISO 16739-1:2024, adds spatial and physical entities for roads, railways, bridges, ports and waterways, alignment-based positioning (IfcAlignment with horizontal, vertical and cant segments), linear placement and new element types such as IfcRail, IfcPavement and IfcSign. A client should require IFC 4.3 explicitly in the EIR, name the reference or alignment-based view expected, specify how alignments and coordinate reference systems (IfcMapConversion, IfcProjectedCRS) are delivered, and check that the chosen authoring and review tools have IFC 4.3 import and export before contract. Because implementations matured only from 2024 onward, pilot exchanges before mandating them on a live project.

How do the ISO 19650 information management functions map onto job titles in a large project organisation?
On the appointing party side the information management function usually sits with a client information manager (in-house or consultant) who owns the EIR, information standard, CDE and acceptance. Each lead appointed party names a BIM Manager or project information manager who owns the BEP, MIDP, federation and review before sharing, supported by BIM Coordinators per discipline or package who run checks and issues. Task teams have BIM Modelers or Technicians producing containers and TIDPs, and contractors add VDC Engineers for 4D, 5D and site use. The standard only requires that the functions are resourced and written into appointments, so the responsibility matrix in the BEP is where the mapping is made explicit.

Why is the ISO 19650 series being revised and what should organisations prepare for?
Parts 1 to 3 went into systematic review from 2024 and ISO/DIS drafts of Parts 1 and 2 circulated in 2026, with Part 3 following; the drafts shorten the title to Information management and re-title Part 2 as Information management process and Part 3 as Implementation of the information management process, reflecting that the approach applies to all information, not only BIM models. Organisations should expect updated terminology and clause numbering, so corporate standards, templates, training material and contracts that quote specific clauses will need a review once the revised parts are published. Until then the 2018 and 2020 editions remain current and contractual.

A client in Saudi Arabia asks for BIM per national standards. What should I actually deliver?
As of 2026 Saudi Arabia has no single national BIM mandate, so ask which client standard governs. Giga-project developers such as NEOM, ROSHN, Diriyah, Qiddiya and Red Sea Global, and bodies such as the Royal Commission for Riyadh City, publish their own BIM execution standards, almost all built on ISO 19650-2 with a mandated CDE, federation cadence, level of information need tables and structured handover to an AIM. The Saudi Building Code governs technical compliance and has enabled pilot BIM-based permit submissions in some municipalities since its 2023 revisions. Deliver to the named client standard, reference ISO 19650 and IFC in the BEP, and confirm classification and handover formats in writing, because they vary by client.

What does a client-side Information Manager need to know beyond what a BIM Manager knows?
The client-side Information Manager works upstream of the delivery team: deriving OIR, AIR and PIR from the owner's business and operational processes, writing EIR that are testable (IDS, level of information need tables, classification and COBie or AIM schemas), setting the project information standard and CDE, assessing supply-chain capability at tender, and accepting or rejecting information against ISO 19650-4. It also requires ISO 19650-3 knowledge to keep the AIM alive after handover, ISO 19650-5 for security triage, and enough procurement and contract knowledge to embed the information standard, protocol and responsibilities into appointments. Software skill matters less than requirements writing, governance and audit.
