Reality capture software turns laser scans, photographs and 360° imagery of existing buildings and sites into registered point clouds, meshes and eventually BIM geometry. In a BIM workflow these tools sit at the front of renovation, retrofit and verification projects: they register raw scans, clean and index them, publish them for viewing in Revit, Navisworks or the cloud, and support the modelling of as-built elements (scan-to-BIM) or the comparison of installed work against design models. Formats such as E57, RCP/RCS, LAS and LGS are the common currency between capture hardware, processing software and authoring tools.
What is the difference between an RCP file and an RCS file in Autodesk ReCap?
An RCS file is a single indexed scan: it holds the points with their coordinates, colour and intensity in a format Autodesk products can stream. An RCP file is the lightweight project that references one or more RCS files plus their positions and settings. When you link a point cloud into Revit, AutoCAD or Navisworks you normally pick the RCP, and the RCS files must travel with it in the same folder structure.

My scanning contractor delivered E57 files. How do I get them into Revit?
Revit cannot link E57 directly; it links RCP/RCS. Open ReCap Pro, create a new project, import the E57 files, let ReCap index them and save the project as RCP. Then in Revit use Insert > Point Cloud and select the RCP. If the E57 contains multiple registered scans ReCap will keep their positions, so check that the cloud lands on the correct shared coordinates before modelling.

Do I need a separate ReCap Pro licence if my office already has the AEC Collection?
No. ReCap Pro is included in the Autodesk AEC Collection subscription, so any Collection seat can index scans and use the cloud photogrammetry features. A standalone ReCap Pro subscription only makes sense for users who do not have the Collection, such as a scanning technician who never opens Revit. ReCap Pro 2027, released in mid-2026, is the current version.

Leica has Cyclone FIELD 360, REGISTER 360 PLUS and 3DR. Which one do I actually need?
They cover three stages. FIELD 360 runs on an iOS or Android tablet on site and pre-registers RTC360, BLK360 or BLK2GO scans while you scan. REGISTER 360 PLUS is the Windows office tool that finalises registration, produces QA reports and publishes LGS/LGSx, E57 or RCP. Cyclone 3DR is for what comes after registration: meshing, AI classification, inspection and exports to IFC, RVT or FBX. Many scan-to-BIM teams only need FIELD 360 and REGISTER 360 PLUS, and then model in Revit with CloudWorx or another plug-in.

What is an LGS or LGSx file and why does my surveyor deliver it instead of E57?
LGS and its newer LGSx variant are Leica's self-contained publishing formats produced by Cyclone REGISTER 360 PLUS. One file contains the registered point cloud, the panoramic imagery and the setup positions, so Leica tools such as CloudWorx for Revit, TruView and GeoCloud can open it without the original Cyclone database. It is convenient for Leica-based workflows, but if you are not using Leica plug-ins ask for an E57 or RCP export as well, which REGISTER 360 PLUS can produce. Note that from version 2026.1.1 the minimum decimation for LGSx export is 2 mm.

Can I automate repetitive inspection deliverables in Cyclone 3DR?
Yes. Cyclone 3DR has a JavaScript scripting engine and Leica maintains a public GitHub repository of example scripts for tasks such as batch inspection reports, mesh generation and export. Scripts can chain classification, comparison and export to IFC, RVT, FBX or BCF so that the same deliverable is produced identically on every project. This is the usual route for service providers who deliver floor flatness or deviation reports at volume.

What does FARO SCENE do and which scanners does it support?
SCENE is FARO's processing software for laser scan data. It registers individual scans into one coordinate system, colourises them from the scanner's photos, cleans and filters them, and exports them to formats such as E57, RCP and PTS or publishes them to FARO Sphere XG. It is the companion software for FARO Focus terrestrial scanners, the Orbis mobile scanner, the Blink imaging scanner and Freestyle 2, and it also imports third-party scans. The current release is SCENE 2026.1 from May 2026.

What is hybrid registration in FARO SCENE?
Hybrid registration lets you combine several registration methods in one project: cloud-to-cloud matching, artificial targets (spheres or checkerboards) and survey control points. SCENE automatically searches for markers and natural references such as planes and corners, and you can lock some scans to surveyed control while letting others register by overlap. It is the recommended approach on large buildings where cloud-to-cloud alone can drift over long corridors.

My registered SCENE project looks fine in 3D but the Revit model built from it is out by a few centimetres across the building. What should I check?
First open the registration report and look at the overlap and tension values for each link; a weak link in the middle of a chain can bend the whole cloud without an obvious visual gap. Second, check whether survey control was applied; without control a long cloud-to-cloud chain accumulates error. Third, confirm the export settings and that Revit placed the RCP by shared coordinates rather than centre-to-centre. Re-register with additional targets or control points if the report shows the problem, then re-export and re-link.

Is HoloBuilder still a product, or has it been replaced?
HoloBuilder still exists but under a new name. FARO acquired HoloBuilder and now markets it as FARO Sphere XG (formerly HoloBuilder). The 360° photo capture, floor-plan pinning and time-based progress documentation that HoloBuilder was known for now live inside Sphere XG alongside point clouds from SCENE and BIM model overlays.
What is Time Travel in Sphere XG and how is it used on site?
Time Travel compares captures of the same location taken on different dates. Because every 360° photo or scan is pinned to a position on the floor plan, you can stand at one spot and slide between visits to see what was installed, covered up or changed. Contractors use it to document conditions before walls are closed, to resolve disputes about sequence and to support progress claims.
Our client asks about data security for hosting site captures. What does FARO Sphere XG offer?
FARO states that Sphere XG has obtained a SOC 2 Type 2 attestation, which is an independent audit of security, availability and confidentiality controls over a period of time. That is normally sufficient for client IT questionnaires on a construction project. For ISO 19650 information management you still need your own naming, status and permission conventions inside the platform, because the attestation covers the vendor's controls, not your project's information structure.
What is FARO As-Built for Autodesk Revit?
It is an add-in that works inside Revit to speed up modelling from point clouds. Instead of tracing manually, you pick points in the cloud and As-Built fits walls, columns, beams, pipes and ducts as native Revit elements, sets levels from the scan, generates ortho images for tracing and checks the finished model against the cloud with surface analysis and clash tools. The current release is As-Built for Autodesk Revit 2025, which supports Revit 2023 to 2026.

Is As-Built sold as a perpetual licence?
No. FARO sells the As-Built Software Suite, which bundles As-Built Modeler, As-Built for AutoCAD and As-Built for Revit, on a subscription basis with digital licences and on-demand purchase options. The subscription keeps you on the current version, which matters because each Revit release needs a matching add-in build.

When should I use As-Built Modeler rather than the Revit add-in?
As-Built Modeler is a standalone application that handles point cloud projects of unlimited size, so use it for measurement, sectioning and extracting CAD geometry when the cloud is too heavy for Revit or when the deliverable is DXF, STEP or IGES rather than a Revit model. Its SendToRevit function pushes views and geometry into Revit where the add-in finishes the BIM elements. A common pattern is to cut and clean in Modeler, then model in Revit with only the relevant regions loaded.

Which RealWorks edition do I need for basic registration of X7 scans?
Trimble sells RealWorks in Starter, Core, Performance and Storage Tank editions on monthly or yearly subscription. Starter covers basic registration, navigation, viewing, surfaces, volumes and orthophotos. Core adds automatic registration for target and target-less projects, classification and 3D inspection, which most scan-to-BIM providers want. Performance adds shape fitting and plant modelling, and Storage Tank is a niche edition for tank calibration.

How do I get a RealWorks project into Revit or ReCap?
Export from RealWorks to E57 or, for Autodesk users, directly to RCP. Since RealWorks 2026.11 (April 2026) unstructured E57 exports can include the equirectangular scan imagery, which ReCap 2025.1 and later read for RealView navigation. Alternatively publish to Trimble Connect for browser review. The native TZF scan files and RWP project should stay in RealWorks; Revit cannot read them.

Can RealWorks process FARO scans?
It imports the common exchange formats, so FARO data delivered as E57 works. The 2026 release notes state that FARO Premium scanners are not supported for native .fls import because of API limitations, and the installer lets you skip the outdated FARO library. The practical rule is to have FARO data exported to E57 in SCENE first, and to keep Trimble X7/X9 data native to benefit from the noise-reduction and registration-refinement tools added in 2026.10.

Is CloudCompare really free for commercial use?
Yes. CloudCompare is released under the GNU GPL, so it can be used commercially at no cost on Windows, macOS and Linux. The latest stable version is 2.13.2 Kharkiv and a 2.14 beta has been available since August 2026. The trade-off is that there is no vendor support contract; help comes from the documentation, forum and community.

How do I reduce a 40 GB point cloud so it is usable for modelling?
In CloudCompare use Edit > Subsample and choose the Space method with a minimum distance such as 5 or 10 mm, which keeps a uniform density rather than dropping random points. Before that, run the Statistical Outlier Removal or Noise filter to remove stray points, and use the segment tool to cut away streets, vegetation or neighbouring buildings. Save the result as E57 or LAS, then index it in ReCap for Revit. Keep the original file untouched for later verification.

How can I check a finished Revit as-built model against the original scan without buying Verity?
Export the Revit model as a mesh (OBJ or FBX, for example via Navisworks or a Revit export add-in) and open it in CloudCompare with the point cloud. Use Tools > Distances > Cloud/Mesh Dist to compute the distance from each point to the model surface; the resulting scalar field colours deviations and you can set a tolerance to highlight points beyond, say, 20 mm. It is manual compared with Verity or Cyclone 3DR inspection, but it is free and adequate for spot checks and reporting on smaller projects.

Can I use Matterport for scan-to-BIM?
For existing-conditions modelling at moderate accuracy, yes. Matterport captures with its Pro3 lidar camera, supported 360° cameras or a phone, processes in the cloud and, on Professional plans and above, sells E57 point clouds, MatterPak meshes, CAD files and a BIM File service that returns Revit and CAD deliverables. Accuracy is lower than a terrestrial laser scanner, so it suits interiors for design and facilities work rather than tolerance verification or structural surveys.

Archicad can read E57 and XYZ point clouds natively as point-cloud objects, but modelling tools that fit elements to the cloud are rarer than for Revit. What is the difference between EdgeWise and Verity?
Both are from ClearEdge3D but solve different problems. EdgeWise builds the model: it extracts pipes, ducts, conduit, cable tray, walls and structural members from a point cloud and exports them into Revit as native families, or to Plant 3D and AVEVA E3D. Verity checks the model: it compares the as-built point cloud against a Revit or Navisworks model and flags each element as in tolerance, out of tolerance or not installed. What does EdgeWise Lite include compared with Pro?
EdgeWise Lite is the semi-automated edition: you select an element in the cloud and the software fits specification-based geometry to it, then exports to Revit. EdgeWise Pro adds fully automated pipe and wall extraction, pattern-based structure extraction and the Plant 3D and E3D integrations, and is priced on request.
How do we integrate Verity into a weekly MEP installation check on a hospital project?
Agree tolerances per system in the BEP (for example 25 mm for hangers and sleeves, 50 mm for large ducts), scan each zone as trades complete rough-in, and run Verity against the coordinated Navisworks or Revit model. Verity colour-codes elements as in tolerance, out of tolerance or not installed and produces HTML/PDF reports and Revit sheets. Share the report in the coordination meeting, have out-of-tolerance elements either corrected on site or pushed back into the model as true as-built geometry so downstream trades coordinate against reality, and record the decisions in the CDE.
What is Undet and which applications does it plug into?
Undet is a point-cloud plug-in family from a Lithuanian vendor that works inside Autodesk Revit, AutoCAD, SketchUp and ARES Commander, plus the standalone Undet Browser. Can I model from a point cloud in SketchUp?
SketchUp has no native point cloud support, so you need an extension. Undet for SketchUp indexes the scan and displays it inside SketchUp with clipping boxes and section views so you can draw faces and push-pull against real geometry. Trimble Scan Essentials is Trimble's own SketchUp point-cloud extension and is the other common choice. Keep the cloud cropped to the area you are modelling, because SketchUp is not designed for very dense data.

Undet for Revit stopped loading after I upgraded Revit. What happened?
Revit add-ins are compiled per Revit version, so a build made for Revit 2025 does not load in Revit 2026. Undet releases new versions several times a year to track Revit updates; check the release notes on undet.com, download the current installer (26.3 as of August 2026) and confirm your subscription covers the update. Also re-index older projects if the indexer format has changed between major versions.

What does scan-to-BIM actually mean?
Scan-to-BIM is the process of capturing an existing building or site with laser scanning or photogrammetry, registering the data into a point cloud, and then modelling BIM elements (walls, floors, structure, MEP) from that cloud in an authoring tool such as Revit or Archicad. The result is an as-built or existing-conditions model with a stated level of accuracy and detail. Which point cloud formats should I ask a scanning contractor to deliver?
Ask for E57 as the vendor-neutral master, because every major tool reads it and it preserves scan positions and imagery. If your modellers use Revit, AutoCAD or Navisworks also ask for RCP/RCS, which those tools link directly. LAS/LAZ is the norm for aerial and drone data and GIS. Vendor formats such as Leica LGS/LGSx, FARO FLS or Trimble TZF are fine to receive additionally but should not be the only deliverable. Also request the registration report and the coordinate system definition.
Which photogrammetry tools are used in AEC besides Metashape?
RealityScan by Epic Games, the renamed RealityCapture, is known for speed and for fusing laser scans with photos, and is free for smaller users. Pix4D sells PIX4Dmatic and PIX4Dmapper on subscription for large-scale drone mapping with LAS, OBJ, GeoTIFF and DXF export. Bentley iTwin Capture Modeler (formerly ContextCapture) produces reality meshes for infrastructure and offers a free Flex tier for data preparation with paid processing. DroneDeploy, now part of Procore, bundles drone flight, cloud photogrammetry and 360° ground capture for construction progress. ReCap Pro also includes cloud photo-to-mesh processing.
Which cloud platform should I use to share scans with the whole project team?
It depends on your capture ecosystem. FARO Sphere XG suits FARO scanner users and 360° progress capture; Hexagon's Reality Cloud Studio (on the HxDR platform, now branded Hexagon GeoCloud) suits Leica users and offers automated registration and meshing on storage-based subscriptions; NavVis IVION suits NavVis mobile mapping; Cintoo is scanner-agnostic with unlimited users; Matterport is easiest for non-technical stakeholders. Autodesk Docs can also view RCP point clouds linked to models, which is often enough for Revit-centric teams already on Autodesk Construction Cloud.
How do I specify accuracy for a scan-to-BIM deliverable in a contract?
Separate three things: capture accuracy (the registered cloud, for example within 5 mm of survey control), modelling tolerance (how far a modelled element may deviate from the cloud, often 10 to 25 mm for architecture and 25 to 50 mm for MEP), and level of detail (which elements are modelled and to what LOD). The USIBD Level of Accuracy specification and the UK-style survey specifications are commonly referenced, and ISO 19650 provides the framework for exchange information requirements. Require a registration report, a control network and a deviation check as evidence.
Revit becomes unusable once I link a large point cloud. What are the best practices?
Index the cloud in ReCap Pro and split it into one RCS per floor or zone so you can link only what you need. In Revit use section boxes and crop regions, set point cloud visibility per view and turn it off in views that do not need it. Keep the cloud on a fast local SSD, not a network drive, and place it by shared coordinates once rather than moving it. For modelling tasks, consider cropping in ReCap, CloudCompare or As-Built Modeler to only the relevant regions.
What skills and certifications help a career in reality capture and scan-to-BIM?
Employers look for competence in a registration package (Leica Cyclone, FARO SCENE or Trimble RealWorks), in ReCap plus Revit modelling, and in a comparison tool such as CloudCompare or Verity, together with survey fundamentals: control networks, coordinate systems and error propagation. Hardware experience with scanners such as the Leica RTC360 or BLK360 and the Trimble X7 or X9, and with drones, is valued.
