BIM did not arrive as a software release. It arrived as an argument, made more than fifty years ago, that a building should be described to a computer as things with properties rather than lines on paper. This book follows that argument through the people, machines, buildings and governments that turned it into how the world builds.
BIM was described before it had a name
Charles Eastman's Building Description System set out an integrated building database, parametric elements and derived drawings in 1975.
Who first wrote "Building Information Model"
Not a vendor, and not "a British architect". Two researchers in the Netherlands, in an academic paper. Chapter 5 explains the myth.
Why the defining standard ignores software
ISO 19650 is about who is accountable for information. The book shows how sixty years of history made that inevitable.
