A Common Data Environment (CDE) is the agreed single source of information for a project or asset, used to collect, manage and share every information container (models, drawings, documents, data) through a controlled process. ISO 19650 defines four container states (Work in Progress, Shared, Published, Archived), plus naming, revision and status metadata that the CDE must enforce. These platforms sit between authoring tools such as Revit or Archicad and the site, client and operations teams, and they provide the audit trail that contracts and information protocols rely on.
What is a Common Data Environment (CDE) and why does every BIM project need one?
A CDE is the agreed single source of information for a project or asset, used to collect, manage and share every information container such as models, drawings, documents and datasets through a controlled process. ISO 19650-1 defines it as both a technology solution and a workflow. Without one, teams exchange files by email and file shares, nobody knows which revision is current, and there is no audit trail for who approved what. What are the four information states in an ISO 19650 CDE?
ISO 19650-2 defines Work in Progress (WIP), Shared, Published and Archived. WIP is where a task team develops information that only that team can see. Shared is where information is checked and made available to other task teams for coordination and comment, with a suitability code such as S1 to S7. Published is the client-authorised state, usually with an A-series code, meaning the information is accepted for its purpose. Archived keeps a record of every container and transaction for the project and asset lifecycle. A container moves forward only after the check, review and authorise gates defined in the information protocol.

How does ISO 19650 information container naming work, and what does the CDE do with it?
ISO 19650-2 requires each container to have a unique ID built from agreed fields, and the UK National Annex gives the common pattern Project-Originator-Volume/System-Level/Location-Type-Role-Number, for example PRJ1-ACM-ZZ-01-DR-A-2001. Revision and status are metadata, not part of the name, and are tracked separately by the CDE. A good CDE stores the field codes, validates uploads against the naming rule, rejects non-compliant names and fills metadata columns automatically from the name. Platforms such as Autodesk Docs, Procore Document Management, Dalux Box, Asite and 12d Synergy all offer this validation; SharePoint does not without add-ons.

What is the difference between a status (suitability) code and a revision code in a CDE?
The status code states what the container is suitable for: S0 is WIP, S1 to S7 are Shared suitabilities such as S2 for information, S3 for review and comment or S4 for stage approval, and A1 to An mean Published and authorised for a stage. The revision code identifies the version, with P01, P02 used for preliminary revisions and C01, C02 for contractual revisions in the UK convention. The CDE increments the revision each time a container is re-shared and changes the status when it moves state. Together they tell a user whether a drawing is current and what they may rely on it for.

How do the main CDE platforms actually implement the WIP, Shared, Published and Archived states?
Few platforms have a literal state field; most map states to folders, permissions and workflows. Autodesk Docs uses a WIP/Shared/Published folder tree with folder-level permissions, a naming standard tool and review workflows that copy approved files into the next folder, with Archived handled through version history. Dalux Box and Viewpoint For Projects provide explicit Shared and Published areas with approval workflows. 12d Synergy uses 01_WIP to 04_Archived folder templates driven by its workflow engine. Aconex and Asite treat state as document status metadata with registers and transmittals rather than folders. Catenda Hub and usBIM.platform provide ISO 19650 workflows on documents while models stay IFC-native. SharePoint has folders only; the transitions must be built with Power Automate or an add-on.

Which CDE should I choose for my project?
Start from the contract and the authoring stack. If the appointment requires demonstrable ISO 19650 compliance in the UK, Asite, Autodesk Construction Cloud and Procore hold the BSI Kitemark, and Viewpoint For Projects is widely accepted. If Revit cloud worksharing matters, Autodesk Construction Cloud is the natural choice. For infrastructure with MicroStation and OpenRoads, ProjectWise is the standard. For neutral ownership on megaprojects with many parties, Aconex or Asite. For openBIM-first teams, Catenda Hub, Dalux Box or usBIM.platform keep IFC and BCF native. For contractors who want field, cost and document control together, Procore or Dalux. Always check pricing model: per user (ACC, Trimble Connect), per project with unlimited users (Catenda, Aconex) or by construction volume (Procore).

Where did today's CDE platforms come from?
Most began as web extranets around 2000: Aconex in Melbourne (2000), Asite in London (2001), 4Projects in the UK (later Viewpoint For Projects) and Thinkproject in Munich. Newforma Project Center (2004) came from the design side as email and project information management. The term CDE was formalised in the UK's PAS 1192-2 in 2013 and carried into ISO 19650 in 2018. Autodesk moved from Buzzsaw to BIM 360 (2012) and then to Autodesk Construction Cloud (2020), now branded Autodesk Forma. Bimsync became Catenda Hub, and Oracle bought Aconex in 2018, Trimble bought Viewpoint in 2018, and Asite acquired 3D Repo in 2022.

What roles work in a CDE day to day, and what skills are expected?
Document controllers administer registers, naming compliance, transmittals and distribution. Information managers (appointing party side) define the information protocol, container naming, CDE workflow and check that deliverables meet the EIR and BEP. BIM coordinators use the CDE to federate models, run clash reviews and manage issues through BCF. Project administrators manage users, roles, folders and permissions. Expected skills are ISO 19650 knowledge, platform administration on at least one major CDE, understanding of IFC and BCF, and vendor certifications such as Procore Certification, Aconex Accredited, Asite Academy diplomas or Bluebeam Certified Professional.

What do the BSI Kitemark, the TÜV SÜD attestation and buildingSMART certification each prove about a CDE?
They certify different things. The BSI Kitemark for BIM software assesses that the software's functionality supports the ISO 19650 framework, plus security-minded processes, user support, development practice and organisational resilience; Asite (2021, renewed 2026), Autodesk Construction Cloud (certificate KM 823075, issued August 2025) and Procore state they hold it. TÜV SÜD's attestation, obtained by Thinkproject's CONCLUDE CDE in 2024, is a conformity assessment against ISO 19650-1, -2 and -3. buildingSMART certification is about correct IFC import or export against a schema and exchange definition, which is what ACCA claims for usBIM.platform. None of them certifies that your project is compliant; that depends on how the platform is configured and used.

What is the difference between Autodesk Docs, Autodesk Build and BIM Collaborate inside Autodesk Construction Cloud?
Docs is the CDE layer: folders, permissions, naming standards, reviews, transmittals and issues, included with every ACC product. Build adds construction management tools such as RFIs, submittals, forms, schedules, cost and quality. BIM Collaborate adds design collaboration and model coordination with clash detection, and BIM Collaborate Pro adds Revit, Civil 3D and Plant 3D cloud worksharing. In 2026 Autodesk placed the suite under the Autodesk Forma brand, so vendor pages now say Forma Data Management for Docs, Forma Build and Forma for Model Coordination, but the modules and the data are the same.

How do I set up an ISO 19650 folder structure and naming standard in Autodesk Docs?
Create top-level folders for WIP, Shared, Published and Archived under Project Files, then set folder permissions so task teams have edit rights only in their own WIP folders and view rights in Shared and Published. In Project Admin, define the Naming Standard with the agreed fields (project, originator, volume, level, type, role, number) and enable it on the Shared and Published folders so non-compliant uploads go to a holding area. Add custom attributes for status and revision, and build review workflows that copy or move approved files from WIP to Shared and from Shared to Published. Autodesk publishes an Autodesk University article and project templates for this setup.

Is Autodesk Construction Cloud certified for ISO 19650?
Yes in the sense of the BSI Kitemark for BIM software. BSI issued certificate KM 823075 to Autodesk on 28 August 2025, valid to 27 August 2028, covering Autodesk Construction Cloud for common data environment, model coordination and clash detection, and design and construction management functions. The Kitemark assesses software functionality plus security-minded approach, user support, development practice and organisational resilience. Autodesk also added ISO 19650 workflow features and EU data residency in 2023. The certificate does not make a project compliant by itself; the naming standard, folder permissions and review workflows still have to be configured to the project's information protocol.

How can I automate reporting and integrations from Autodesk Construction Cloud?
Three routes exist. Autodesk Platform Services (APS) exposes REST APIs for Data Management, Issues, RFIs, Submittals, Model Coordination and account administration, secured by OAuth; this is how most custom integrations and partner apps are built. The Data Connector lets an account admin schedule bulk extracts of project data to CSV or Power BI without coding. Autodesk Construction Cloud Connect is the no-code workflow automation service for syncing with systems such as SharePoint, Procore or ERP tools. Webhooks fire on file and issue events so external systems can react immediately. Note that BIM 360 legacy endpoints still exist but Autodesk changed cloud model download workflows in February 2026, so integrations should target current ACC endpoints.

Is BIM 360 being retired, and what replaces it?
Autodesk states there are currently no plans to retire the BIM 360 next-generation platform, but no new features are being added and new projects should start on Autodesk Construction Cloud, now branded Autodesk Forma. The Classic product BIM 360 Glue reaches end of life on 31 July 2026, after which its data is not accessible, and Autodesk provides a data transition tool to copy Glue models into the Files tool. BIM 360 Docs became Autodesk Docs, BIM 360 Design became BIM Collaborate Pro, and BIM 360 Build and Field became Autodesk Build.

My Revit models are still on BIM 360 Docs. What changed in 2026 and how should I migrate?
Autodesk changed the workflow for downloading Revit cloud models from BIM 360 Docs and Autodesk Docs from 15 February 2026, after a transition period that began in February 2025, so scripts and add-ins that relied on the old download method need updating to the current APS approach. For migration, Autodesk recommends starting new projects in ACC and using the in-product transition tools to copy project files and models. Cloud workshared Revit models must be re-initiated in the ACC project, so plan the cutover at a model milestone, freeze WIP, publish a final version on BIM 360 and archive it before re-hosting.

How is Procore priced and does every subcontractor need a licence?
Procore charges an upfront annual fee per product based on the customer's Annual Construction Volume (ACV), the value of construction work run through the platform, rather than per user. This means the general contractor or owner pays, and subcontractors, consultants and other collaborators can be invited without additional seats. Procore does not publish list prices; quotes depend on the modules chosen and the volume band. Procore's own certification training is free to anyone.

It is most common with UK main contractors and their document controllers and design managers, and it is sold with tailored pricing as part of the Trimble Construction One portfolio.
How are revisions and sign-offs managed in Viewpoint For Projects?
Each container is uploaded to a container folder with metadata including revision, status and classification, and new uploads create new revisions while older ones remain accessible. Workflows are configured per project to route documents through review, comment and approval steps with assigned roles and deadlines, and a document cannot move to a Published area until the workflow completes. Trimble provides a training video on ISO 19650 and classification in the product. Every action is logged in the audit trail, which document controllers export as evidence at handover.
Should I use Viewpoint For Projects or Trimble Connect?
They solve different problems. Viewpoint For Projects is a document-control CDE with ISO 19650 states, naming, approval workflows and audit trail, aimed at contractual information management. Trimble Connect is a model and file collaboration hub with fast federated 3D viewing, ToDos and releases, priced per user, aimed at coordination between Tekla, SketchUp and field teams. On UK projects it is common to run Viewpoint For Projects as the formal CDE and Trimble Connect for model coordination, publishing approved models from one to the other.
How much does Trimble Connect cost and is there a free version?
In September 2026 Trimble lists two plans: Pro at USD 349 per user per year and Innovate at USD 499 per user per year on annual billing, with Enterprise custom pricing for teams of 30 or more. A free 30-day trial of Innovate is available; the page no longer shows a permanent free plan. Pro includes the 2D and 3D viewers, comments, tags, file sharing, property sets and the desktop, mobile and Mirror apps. Innovate adds data analysis tools, the Visualizer, the Revit application and Object Manager.

Which file formats can Trimble Connect view and federate?
Trimble states support for over 45 file types including geospatial data. In practice teams federate IFC as the neutral format, plus DWG and DXF drawings, SketchUp SKP, PDF documents, Tekla TRB and Revit models exported through the Trimble Connect Revit application. Models are combined in the 3D viewer with property inspection, sectioning and measurement, and ToDos can be exchanged as BCF with authoring tools. How does BCF issue round-tripping work between Catenda Hub and my authoring tools?

In 2026 Catenda ships an MCP (Model Context Protocol) server so AI agents such as Claude or ChatGPT can query and act on project data within the user's permissions. Is Dalux free, and what is the difference between Dalux Box and Dalux BIM Viewer?
Dalux BIM Viewer and Field Basic are free and allow unlimited project members to view federated models and drawings on desktop and mobile. How does model validation in Dalux Box work?
When a model is uploaded, Dalux Box can run property checks against your project requirements, for example that every wall carries a fire rating, and hard and soft clash detection between disciplines. Results appear as issues in the viewer and can be exchanged as BCF. Automation re-runs the checks whenever a new version of the model is uploaded, so the validation status stays current without manual effort. This lets the CDE reject or flag models before they move into the Shared area.

Data residency for a specific contract should be confirmed in the quote because the platform is delivered as SaaS.
What is usBIM.platform and is it really free?
usBIM.platform is ACCA software's cloud CDE, launched in 2019, for documents and IFC models across the project lifecycle. ACCA offers free access to a usBIM account with limited storage, and paid tiers add storage and applications such as clash detection, cost estimating and digital twin tools. Newforma Project Center remains the on-premise product. How would I architect SharePoint as the WIP environment alongside a project CDE?
Give each task team a SharePoint site or Teams channel as its WIP environment with a document library that carries ISO 19650 metadata columns (originator, volume, level, type, role, number, status, revision) and required-field validation. Use Power Automate to check the file name against the naming rule and to move or copy the checked container into the project CDE, for example Autodesk Docs, Dalux Box or Asite, via their APIs when the internal check is approved. Keep external users out of SharePoint entirely so the Shared and Published states exist only in the CDE. Retention policies in Microsoft 365 then provide the archive of the WIP history.
