🧩 Model Coordination, Clash Detection, Checking & Review
Coordination and checking tools take the discipline models produced in authoring software (architecture, structure, MEP, civil), federate them into one shared model, and test that model for geometric clashes, clearance problems, missing data and rule violations. They are also where issues are raised, assigned and closed, usually through the open BCF format, so that the design team can fix problems before they reach site. Most tools in this category read IFC and native formats, and many now offer cloud viewers and automated checks against IDS or custom rulesets.
Solibri (Starter / Essential / Advanced / Premium)
SolibriRule-based IFC model checking, clash detection, information takeoff and BCF coordination.Model Coordination, Clash Detection, Checking & ReviewSubscriptionWindowsmacOSIFC ⇦
Solibri is the reference tool for rule-based quality assurance of BIM models. It federates IFC models, runs rulesets (clash, clearance, accessibility, space checks, property and classification checks, IDS validation) and produces presentations that are shared as BCF issues. Since April 2026 the product is sold in four tiers (Starter, Essential, Advanced, Premium) plus Security+ for offline environments, replacing the former Solibri Office, Site and Anywhere line. Design managers, BIM managers and client-side reviewers use it to check deliverables before they are accepted.

Training guidelines & learning paths
A four-stage path per category, with skills, exercises, free resources and the official vendor certifications worth pursuing.
🧩 BIM Coordinator: Clash Detection, Model Checking and Issue Management
Estimated hours: 130A path for modellers and site engineers who want to run model coordination on real projects. It moves from opening and federating models in free viewers, through clash detection in Navisworks and rule-based checking in Solibri, to cloud coordination, BCF issue management and automated checking pipelines. At the end the learner can set up and run a full weekly coordination cycle and report on it.BIM CoordinatorBIM ManagerVDC EngineerDesign ManagerInformation Manager
Prerequisites: Working knowledge of at least one authoring tool (Revit, Archicad, Tekla Structures or similar) · Basic understanding of IFC and how models are exported · Familiarity with reading 2D drawings and construction sequences
Foundation
20 h- Explain hard, clearance and workflow clashes and why coordination happens before construction
- Open, federate and navigate IFC models in a free viewer (BIMcollab Zoom free, BIMvision, Dalux BIM Viewer or Navisworks Freedom)
- Read component properties, sections and measurements in a federated model
- Describe what BCF is and open a BCF issue with its viewpoint
- Name the main tools in the category and their vendor, pricing model and native formats
Software focus: BIMcollab (Nexus / Zoom / BCF Managers), BIMvision, Dalux BIM Viewer / Dalux Box, Autodesk Navisworks (Manage / Simulate / Freedom)
Practice exercises- Export an architectural and a structural model to IFC from your authoring tool and federate them in BIMcollab Zoom free and in BIMvision; compare how each shows the model tree
- Open a published NWD in Navisworks Freedom, save three viewpoints and inspect properties of a beam and a duct
- Create one issue in BIMcollab Nexus (free trial) from Zoom and open the resulting BCF in your authoring tool
- Write a one-page glossary: NWC/NWF/NWD, IFC, BCF, IDS, federated model, clash matrix
Outcome: The learner can federate IFC models in a free viewer, navigate them confidently and explain the purpose of coordination and BCF.
Practitioner
40 h- Build search sets and run hard and clearance clash tests in Navisworks Manage, group results and set statuses
- Run stock rulesets in Solibri, tune parameters, create presentations and export BCF and reports
- Create clash sets and BCF Topics in Trimble Connect for Windows
- Publish models to Revizto with the Revizto+ plugin and manage issues in the Issue Tracker
- Set up a coordination space in Forma for Model Management and review automatic clash results
Software focus: Autodesk Navisworks (Manage / Simulate / Freedom), Solibri (Starter / Essential / Advanced / Premium), Trimble Connect, Revizto, Autodesk BIM Collaborate / BIM Collaborate Pro (Model Coordination)
Practice exercises- In Navisworks Manage, create search sets for ducts, pipes and structural framing, run an MEP vs Structure clash test with a 10 mm tolerance and a 50 mm clearance test, and group results by level
- In Solibri, run the Intersections, Space and Deliverable rulesets on the same models, adjust rule parameters and export a BCF file with at least ten issues
- Load two models in Trimble Connect for Windows, create a clash set, and turn three clashes into BCF Topics assigned to a colleague
- Complete Revizto Academy Level 1 Collaboration Core and publish a Revit model with sheets into a Revizto project
- Create a Model Coordination space in Forma for Model Management, upload two models and filter clashes by tolerance
Outcome: The learner can run clash detection and rule checks in the main tools and communicate findings as BCF issues.
Professional
40 h- Design a project clash matrix and tolerance table aligned with the BIM execution plan
- Validate deliverables against IDS files in Solibri and BIMcollab Zoom and report non-compliance
- Run a weekly coordination cycle with issue ownership, due dates and metrics in a CDE (Catenda Hub, Dalux Box, Forma or Trimble Connect)
- Diagnose coordinate, unit and export problems that break federation
- Map the coordination process to ISO 19650 information states and approvals
Software focus: Autodesk Navisworks (Manage / Simulate / Freedom), Solibri (Starter / Essential / Advanced / Premium), BIMcollab (Nexus / Zoom / BCF Managers), Catenda Hub (formerly bimsync), Dalux BIM Viewer / Dalux Box, Autodesk BIM Collaborate / BIM Collaborate Pro (Model Coordination)
Practice exercises- Write a clash matrix for a mid-size building (architecture, structure, mechanical, electrical, plumbing, fire) with test types, tolerances and responsible parties, and implement it as saved tests in Navisworks with folders (2027)
- Author a small IDS file for wall fire ratings and door classifications, check a model with Solibri Rule 244 and with BIMcollab Zoom, and compare the results
- Simulate three weekly cycles: update one discipline model, re-run tests, show which clashes were auto-resolved (Smart Issues in BIMcollab, status in Navisworks) and report open issues per discipline
- Deliberately export a model with the wrong coordinate base, federate it, diagnose the offset and fix it at source
- Set up shared and published folders in Catenda Hub or Dalux Box and document the approval step where checks are recorded
Outcome: The learner can own the coordination process on a project, from clash matrix to ISO 19650 approvals and reporting.
Expert
30 h- Automate checks with the Navisworks API or Batch Utility, Solibri Autorun and Zoom Nightshift
- Standardise IFC data with Simplebim dataflows before checking
- Integrate issue platforms through the openCDE BCF API and vendor APIs (Catenda, BIMcollab Nexus, Revizto, Forma)
- Evaluate and specify coordination platforms for an organisation, including licensing models and openBIM requirements
- Build or specify a browser review portal on xeokit or a commercial viewer and understand the licensing implications
Software focus: Autodesk Navisworks (Manage / Simulate / Freedom), Solibri (Starter / Essential / Advanced / Premium), Simplebim, BIMcollab (Nexus / Zoom / BCF Managers), xeokit SDK / xeokit BIM Viewer, Revizto
Practice exercises- Write a script (Navisworks .NET API or Batch Utility) that appends the latest models from a folder, runs the saved clash tests and exports an HTML/XML report on a schedule
- Configure Solibri Autorun to check every new IFC in a watched folder and export results; compare with a Zoom Nightshift schedule
- Build a Simplebim dataflow that renames properties, adds a classification and removes non-structural content, then prove the Solibri check passes cleanly afterwards
- Use the Catenda openCDE BCF API or BIMcollab Nexus API to pull all open issues into a spreadsheet and produce a closure-rate chart per discipline
- Complete Revizto Academy Level 3 Implementation Expert and write a one-page platform recommendation for a fictional client comparing Forma for Model Management, Catenda Hub and Trimble Connect
Outcome: The learner can automate and govern coordination across many projects and advise an organisation on tool selection.

Tips from our consultants
- Agree the clash matrix, tolerances and coordinate origin in the BIM execution plan before the first federation; most wasted clash meetings come from missing agreements, not missing software.
- Build every clash test from property-based search sets so it survives model updates, and keep statuses so meetings only discuss new and active clashes.
- Use BCF as the common language: pick one issue platform per project and make every tool, including Navisworks through an add-in, read and write to it.
- Check data before geometry: an IDS or Solibri deliverable check on properties and classifications finds problems that no clash test will show.
- Learn one desktop clash tool (Navisworks Manage) and one rule-based checker (Solibri) deeply; cloud platforms change names often but the underlying skills transfer.
- Report closure rate per discipline rather than raw clash counts; a falling count can simply mean tolerance filters were loosened.
