Infrastructure BIM software models linear and site assets such as roads, railways, bridges, earthworks, drainage and utilities as georeferenced 3D objects with attributes. It sits between survey and GIS data on one side and structural, construction and asset-management tools on the other. Since IFC 4.3 became an ISO standard, these tools increasingly exchange alignments, corridors and civil structures through openBIM formats rather than proprietary files.

InfraWorks builds a georeferenced 3D context model from terrain, imagery, GIS, point-cloud and CAD data, then lets planners sketch roads, rail, bridges, tunnels and drainage on it. It is used in the early stages of a project to test options, run sight-distance, traffic and mobility simulations and communicate with stakeholders. Preliminary alignments, profiles and bridge structures are handed to Civil 3D or Revit for detailed design. Cloud-hosted models allow several users to work on the same context model. It was released on April 2, 2026 in its 2027 version.

- Pick the primary design tool your target clients require: Civil 3D for most consultancies, OpenRoads for many US DOTs and Bentley-standardised owners, 12d Model in Australia and New Zealand, Novapoint in Scandinavia.
- Agree the project coordinate system and datum with the surveyor before modelling anything; most infrastructure federation problems are CRS problems.
- Keep LandXML for geometry re-use between civil tools and IFC 4.3 for coordination and handover, and state both in the BIM execution plan.
- Validate every IFC export in an independent viewer and check alignment, classification and property sets, not just geometry.
