What is Autodesk Civil 3D and how is it different from plain AutoCAD?
Civil 3D is Autodesk's civil engineering application built on top of AutoCAD. It adds intelligent objects such as surfaces, alignments, profiles, corridors, grading, parcels and pipe networks that are linked to each other, so editing an alignment updates the corridor, sections and quantities automatically. Plain AutoCAD only has lines, polylines and blocks with no engineering relationships. What are Data Shortcuts in Civil 3D and when should I use them instead of external references?
Data Shortcuts (DREFs) share individual Civil 3D objects such as surfaces, alignments, profiles, pipe networks and corridors between drawings inside a project folder without referencing the whole drawing. The consumer drawing gets a read-only copy that updates when the source changes, so one surface can drive many sheet drawings. Xrefs bring in the entire drawing as graphics and cannot be used for labelling or design calculations on the referenced civil objects. Civil 3D 2027 added a dedicated Data Shortcuts tab in the External References palette to manage and resolve them, and Autodesk Docs can host the shortcut project for cloud teams.

How do I get a Civil 3D model into IFC for an openBIM coordination model, and what are the limits?
Use the IFC export on the Output tab, choose the schema (current releases offer IFC 4x3 alongside IFC 2x3 and IFC4) and select the alignments, corridors, surfaces, pipe and pressure networks to export. Map Civil 3D property sets to IFC property sets in the export settings so attributes such as material or pipe size survive. Check the result in a free viewer before issuing, because corridor solids and surface TINs can be large and classification of objects depends on the mapping file. For alignment geometry exchange with other civil tools, LandXML is still the most reliable format, and IFC 4.3 is used mainly for the federated coordination model.

What does Autodesk InfraWorks do that Civil 3D does not?
InfraWorks builds a georeferenced context model from terrain, imagery, GIS, point clouds and CAD in minutes, then lets you sketch roads, rail, bridges, tunnels and drainage on it for option studies and stakeholder visualisation. It includes traffic and mobility simulation, sight-distance checks and parametric civil structures. Civil 3D is for detailed engineering design and documentation, so the two are used in sequence: concepts in InfraWorks, then handed to Civil 3D for detailed design. How do I move a design between InfraWorks and Civil 3D?
The two products exchange data through the IMX format. In Civil 3D, use Export IMX or the InfraWorks ribbon tools to send surfaces, alignments, profiles and pipe networks to InfraWorks, and use Open InfraWorks Model or Import IMX to bring InfraWorks roads, bridges and surfaces into Civil 3D as native objects. Component roads become alignments and profiles, bridges can be sent to Revit for detailed structural design. Keep both products on the same release year and use a consistent coordinate system in both models, otherwise objects will land in the wrong place.

Is InfraWorks suitable as the coordination model on an infrastructure project, or should that be Navisworks?
InfraWorks is best used for context, concept design and visualisation, not as the formal coordination model. It reads IFC, DWG, DGN, Revit and point-cloud data, which makes it useful for presenting a federated view on terrain, but it lacks the clash management, viewpoints, issue tracking and BCF workflows that Navisworks, Autodesk Construction Cloud or Solibri provide. What is OpenRoads Designer and what file format does it use?
OpenRoads Designer is Bentley's application for detailed road and highway design, built on the MicroStation CONNECT platform. It works in DGN files and stores civil geometry, terrain models, corridors and drainage as intelligent civil objects inside them. The current release is OpenRoads Designer 2025 (build 25.0.x, often called 2025 R1). It can read and write DWG, IFC and LandXML and reference point clouds and reality meshes, and it shares its geometry engine with OpenRail Designer and OpenSite Designer.
What are templates and civil cells in OpenRoads Designer?
A template is the cross-section definition applied along an alignment to build a corridor; it contains points, components and constraints for lanes, kerbs, shoulders, side slopes and subgrade, and it can switch behaviour based on end conditions. Civil cells are reusable, parametric 2D and 3D design objects such as intersections, cul-de-sacs or driveways that are placed by selecting reference geometry and rebuild when that geometry changes. How do large agencies deploy OpenRoads Designer consistently across hundreds of users?
They publish a managed workspace: a configuration of DGN libraries, template libraries, feature definitions, sheet seeds and cell libraries that OpenRoads loads at start-up, typically delivered through ProjectWise managed workspaces or a shared configuration folder. State DOTs such as Virginia, Georgia and Oregon maintain and version these workspaces publicly. Cant (superelevation of the outer rail) is defined as a separate cant alignment linked to the horizontal geometry, with applied and equilibrium cant, cant deficiency and transition lengths checked against the selected design standard. For renewals, regression analysis fits horizontal and vertical geometry to surveyed rail points so the design follows the existing track within tolerance. The 2025 release extended the Complex Redefine and Replace tools to both horizontal and vertical geometry, which speeds up re-alignment of existing track.
Which IFC 4.3 concepts matter when exchanging a rail design from OpenRail Designer?
IFC 4.3 introduces IfcRailway as a facility type, IfcTrackElement for track components, IfcRail for the rails themselves, and alignment entities that carry horizontal, vertical and cant segments. Linear placement along the alignment lets consuming tools locate objects by chainage. When exporting, make sure the alignment, cant and track components are classified with these entities and that property sets carry the design speed, gauge and cant values, otherwise the receiver only gets geometry. What is the difference between OpenBridge Modeler and OpenBridge Designer?
OpenBridge Modeler creates the data-rich parametric 3D bridge model tied to a road or rail alignment. OpenBridge Designer contains the Modeler plus the LEAP Bridge and RM Bridge analysis engines, so the same model can be analysed and designed without importing or exporting. Modeler alone is sold at a lower subscription price for teams that only need geometry and drawings. Both are Bentley products on the MicroStation platform and use DGN files.
How does an OpenBridge model stay coordinated with the road alignment?
The bridge is built on the OpenRoads or OpenRail alignment and profile referenced from the civil DGN, and the deck, piers and abutments are placed by station and offset. When the alignment or profile changes, the bridge geometry updates because the relationship is live rather than a copied line. The same applies to terrain: pier and abutment heights follow the referenced terrain model. This is why Bentley recommends keeping road, rail and bridge models in one ProjectWise-managed set of files.
Can OpenBridge Designer analyse to my national bridge code and what did the 2025 release improve?
OpenBridge Designer supports more than 20 international bridge design codes through the LEAP and RM engines, including AASHTO LRFD and Eurocode-based checks, and runs staged 4D analysis with creep and shrinkage. The 2025 release improved the transfer of complex components between the modeller and the analysis engines, for example decks with end offsets, concrete diaphragms and pile bents with steel H-piles. What is Trimble Quantm used for?
Quantm is a route and alignment optimisation system for roads and railways. It combines terrain, geology, hydrology, environmental areas, property ownership, design standards and unit costs, generates millions of possible alignments and returns a short list of the lowest-cost options that satisfy all constraints. Planners use it in feasibility and preliminary design to compare corridors on cost, earthworks and CO2. It is not a detailed design tool; the chosen alignment is exported to Civil 3D, OpenRoads, Novapoint or Trimble Business Center.

Which formats can Quantm import and export?

What is the difference between Novapoint and Quadri?
Novapoint is Trimble's suite of infrastructure design modules for road, railway, tunnel, bridge, water and sewer, landscape, noise and road markings. Quadri is the cloud-hosted central model that all Novapoint tasks read from and write to, acting as the single source of truth and connecting to Civil 3D, Revit, Tekla Structures, OpenRoads, SketchUp and Trimble Connect. Which CAD versions work with Novapoint 2026 and how often does it update?
Novapoint 2026 works with AutoCAD, AutoCAD Map 3D and Civil 3D versions 2021 through 2027, or with Trimble Drawing 2026 (build 3522 recommended). AutoCAD 2027 support is installed through a separate ac27 package. Trimble releases point versions several times a year: 2026.1 in January 2026, 2026.2 in March and 2026.4 on 25 June 2026, and each embeds an updated Quadri for Windows. Keep clients on the same Novapoint release as the Quadri project to avoid conversion prompts.
What does it mean that Quadri projects can run on IFC 4.3-based object type catalogues?
Every object in a Quadri model is classified against an object type catalogue (OTC) that defines its type, attributes and relationships. From Novapoint 2026.4 the catalogue can be based on the IFC 4.3 schema, so road signs, road markings and other objects are stored directly against IFC 4.3 classes and property sets instead of a proprietary classification, which simplifies IFC export and validation against client information requirements. The IFC 4.3 templates are still in beta. Combined with Automation Rule Sets that run checks when a Road, Railway or Water & Sewer task is built, this moves rule-based quality control into the central model.
What is Trimble Business Center and who uses it?
Trimble Business Center (TBC) is Trimble's office software for processing survey and reality-capture data from GNSS receivers, total stations, laser scanners, mobile mapping systems and drones into surfaces, alignments, point clouds and deliverables. Is Allplan Bridge still available, or has it been replaced?
From the ALLPLAN 2025 release the ALLPLAN Civil edition replaced the subscription Allplan Bridge configuration, so the parametric bridge modelling, analysis and reinforcement tools are now bought as ALLPLAN Civil. The vendor page states this explicitly in its FAQ. ALLPLAN Civil is sold by subscription with annual or monthly terms and includes support and ALLPLAN Cloud services. Can ArcGIS Pro open Revit and IFC models?
Yes. ArcGIS Pro reads Revit files (versions 2021 to 2026 in ArcGIS Pro 3.7) and IFC files in IFC2X3, IFC4, IFC4X1 and IFC4X3 schemas as read-only BIM data sources, showing them as building layers with floors, disciplines and categories. Civil 3D DWG files are read as CAD data with their civil objects. The models are not editable in place, but the BIM File To Geodatabase tool converts them to feature classes that can be edited, symbolised and published as scene layers. ArcGIS Pro does not export IFC.
How do I turn a Civil 3D or IFC surface into GIS terrain in ArcGIS Pro?
ArcGIS Pro 3.7, released in May 2026, added the Create Terrain from BIM geoprocessing tool, which generates a terrain dataset directly from TIN surfaces stored in Civil 3D DWG or IFC files. Before running it, define the coordinate system of the BIM file with a PRJ or the georeferencing tools so the surface lands correctly. The same release lets the BIM File To Geodatabase tool accept building layers as input and extracts piping centrelines from Revit as linear features for network tracing. Results can be published to ArcGIS Online or Enterprise as scene layers.
What do I need to run ArcGIS GeoBIM and what does it actually connect?
ArcGIS GeoBIM needs at least one ArcGIS user type (Creator, Professional or Professional Plus) on ArcGIS Online or ArcGIS Enterprise plus an Autodesk Forma licence, because it establishes a cloud-to-cloud connection between ArcGIS and Autodesk Forma, formerly Autodesk Construction Cloud. It brings Forma project models, documents and issues into ArcGIS web apps with geospatial context and lets teams control which BIM data is synchronised, a control that was extended in the June 2026 update. ArcGIS Pro itself is licensed through annual user-type subscriptions at Basic, Standard or Advanced level; there is no perpetual option on the current price list.
Is QGIS really free and which version should I install in 2026?
Yes. QGIS is free and open source under the GNU General Public License and runs on Windows, macOS, Linux, BSD and Android; QGIS.org asks for voluntary donations. As of September 2026 the latest release is QGIS 4.2.2 and the long-term release is 3.44.14. QGIS 4.0, released on 6 March 2026, completed the move to Qt6, and 4.2 is scheduled to become the first 4.x LTR in October 2026. Organisations that value stability and plugin compatibility usually stay on the LTR.

QGIS cannot open IFC files. How do I use it with BIM data?
QGIS has no native IFC reader, so BIM data is brought in through intermediate formats. Export footprints, alignments or terrain from the BIM tool as DXF, shapefile, GeoPackage or LandXML converted to a surface, or use an IfcOpenShell Python script to extract geometry and properties into GeoPackage. Community plugins add partial IFC reading. In the other direction, QGIS supplies georeferenced terrain, cadastre, environmental constraints and imagery to Civil 3D, InfraWorks or Novapoint, and its coordinate reference system tools are useful for sorting out projection and datum issues before models are federated.

Use PyQGIS, the Python API, either in the built-in console, as a standalone script or packaged as a plugin, to batch-reproject data, clip constraints to the corridor, build DEMs and generate GeoPackages for the design team. The Processing framework exposes hundreds of GDAL, GRASS, SAGA and native algorithms, and the graphical Model Designer chains them into reusable models that run from the toolbox or the command line. The product page cites IFC 4.2 as the export schema, so check with the receiving team whether IFC 4.3 alignment entities are required, in which case LandXML plus the IFC solids is the safer package. How does an IfcAlignment work and why does linear placement matter?
An IfcAlignment holds a horizontal layout made of segments (lines, circular arcs, clothoids and other transitions), a vertical layout of gradients and parabolic or circular curves defined against the horizontal distance, and optionally a cant layout for rail. Each segment is described both by business parameters (start point, direction, radius, length) and by geometric representation, so a receiving tool can rebuild exact geometry rather than a polyline. Linear placement (IfcLinearPlacement) positions objects by distance along the alignment with lateral and vertical offsets, which is how road signs, bridge bearings, drainage inlets and track components are located by chainage. IFC 4.3 carries the same alignment information plus 3D objects, classification and property sets, and is the choice for federated coordination models, client information deliverables and archiving. In practice teams send LandXML for geometry re-use in another design tool and IFC 4.3 for coordination and handover, and state both in the BIM execution plan.

Which road design tool should my company adopt: Civil 3D, OpenRoads, 12d Model or Novapoint?
Follow the client and the region. Civil 3D is the default for most consultancies worldwide and for firms already on AutoCAD, Revit and Autodesk Docs.
