General CAD, 3D modelling and mechanical design tools produce geometry rather than building information: lines, surfaces, solids and meshes without the object semantics (wall, door, slab) that BIM authoring tools attach and that IFC carries between platforms. In AEC they sit around the BIM model: 2D drafting and legacy DWG/DGN drawings, concept massing and facade studies, fabrication and product design for building components, and visualisation or animation of the finished design. Understanding where geometry-only tools end and information-rich BIM begins is what lets a team move data between them without losing meaning.

  • Explain the difference between geometry-only CAD/3D tools and BIM authoring tools, and where IFC fits
  • Draft 2D linework in AutoCAD (or BricsCAD/ZWCAD) with layers, blocks, xrefs, annotation scaling and DWG versions
  • Build a simple massing model in SketchUp using groups, components, tags and scenes
  • Identify native and exchange formats (DWG, DGN, SKP, 3DM, STEP, IFC, FBX) and what each preserves
  • Understand licensing models: subscription, perpetual, freemium, open source

Practice exercises
  • Redraw a one-storey floor plan in AutoCAD from a PDF: set units, create a layer standard, use blocks for doors and windows, plot to PDF at 1:100
  • Model the same building as a massing study in SketchUp Free or Pro, organise it in groups and components and export DWG and glTF
  • Open a sample IFC file in Blender with Bonsai or in FreeCAD's BIM workbench and inspect how walls carry type, properties and relationships that a SketchUp face does not
  • Install FreeCAD and reproduce a simple parametric bracket to experience feature history

Outcome: The learner can produce a clean 2D DWG and a simple 3D concept model and explain what information is missing compared with a BIM object.

Practitioner

  • Prepare DWGs for linking into Revit or Archicad (purge, audit, origin, units, layer mapping)
  • Produce 2D drawing sets from SketchUp with LayOut and assign IFC classifications to components
  • Model precise surfaces and solids in Rhino and exchange them via STEP, SAT and 3DM
  • Link or import BIM geometry into 3ds Max, Cinema 4D or Blender for visualisation and manage materials and scene weight
  • Create a simplified product model in Inventor, SOLIDWORKS, Fusion or Onshape and export STEP for a BIM family

  • Build a two-storey house in SketchUp Pro with IFC classified components, create a LayOut sheet set and export IFC and DWG
  • Model a doubly curved canopy in Rhino, split it into panel-sized surfaces and export STEP and 3DM for a BIM team
  • Link a Revit sample model into 3ds Max (or export FBX to Blender/Cinema 4D), assign materials and render one exterior and one interior view
  • Model a light fitting or HVAC unit in Fusion or Onshape, simplify it and export STEP, then load it into a Revit family template

Outcome: The learner can move geometry reliably between CAD, DCC and BIM tools and knows which format to use for each hand-off.

Professional

  • Produce and validate IFC from SketchUp, BricsCAD BIM, FreeCAD or SOLIDWORKS and check it in Solibri, BIMcollab Zoom or Bonsai
  • Use Rhino.Inside.Revit to convert Rhino and Grasshopper geometry into native Revit elements with categories and parameters
  • Publish manufacturer content with Inventor BIM Content (RFA and IFC) including connectors and classification
  • Manage DGN/DWG exchange with MicroStation environments and understand ProjectWise and iTwin roles in ISO 19650 delivery
  • Troubleshoot exchange problems: units, origins, proxy objects, reversed faces, mesh versus B-rep, DWG version mismatches

Practice exercises
  • Export IFC from a classified SketchUp model and from BricsCAD BIM, open both in Bonsai and compare property sets, spatial structure and types; write a one-page findings note
  • Build a parametric facade in Grasshopper and push it into Revit as curtain panels or adaptive components through Rhino.Inside.Revit
  • Take a SOLIDWORKS or Inventor assembly of an air-handling unit, simplify it and publish an RFA with duct and electrical connectors plus an IFC; load into Revit and check connector behaviour
  • Convert a MicroStation DGN survey to DWG with a level-to-layer mapping table and verify the coordinate system in Revit and Civil 3D
  • Diagnose three broken exchanges supplied by the trainer (wrong units, far origin, exploded proxies) and document the fix

Outcome: The learner can run geometry-to-information hand-offs on a real openBIM project and diagnose the common failures.

Expert

  • Script Blender headless with Python and IfcOpenShell for IFC processing, mesh reduction and batch rendering
  • Design Grasshopper, RhinoCommon and Rhino Compute pipelines that write results to Revit or IFC
  • Build configurable BIM content with Inventor iLogic, Onshape FeatureScript and the REST API, or the SOLIDWORKS API
  • Define an office CAD/3D governance standard: platform choice, licensing, templates, naming aligned to ISO 19650, data residency and API portability

  • Create a headless Blender script that opens an IFC with IfcOpenShell, colours elements by IfcType and renders four fixed cameras to PNG
  • Publish a Grasshopper definition through Rhino Compute and call it from a small web page that returns panel geometry as glTF
  • Configure one master Inventor or Onshape model of a modular component with rules so that ten catalogue variants are exported automatically as STEP and RFA/IFC
  • Draft a two-page CAD and 3D platform standard for a 50-person practice covering tool selection, licences, templates, naming, exchange formats and automation ownership

Tips from our consultants

  • Decide the geometry-to-information hand-off point per project: model concept in SketchUp or Rhino, but move to a BIM tool before documentation and quantities are needed.
  • Always model near the origin, in the project units, and agree a shared coordinate point before exchanging DWG, DGN or 3DM files.
  • Prefer B-rep formats (STEP, SAT, 3DM) for precise geometry and mesh formats (FBX, glTF, OBJ) only for visualisation.
  • Keep automation in portable languages where possible: AutoLISP runs in AutoCAD, BricsCAD and ZWCAD; Python runs in Blender, FreeCAD, Rhino and Fusion.
  • Validate every IFC you export in a second tool (Bonsai, Solibri or BIMcollab Zoom) before it goes to the CDE.
  • Track vendor licence changes: AutoCAD, 3ds Max, Inventor and Cinema 4D are subscription only, while Rhino, BricsCAD and ZWCAD still sell perpetual licences.
  • Do not assume a certification claim: check the buildingSMART certified-software register for the exact product, version and exchange before relying on IFC output contractually.
