A Common Data Environment (CDE) is the agreed single source of information for a project or asset, used to collect, manage and share every information container (models, drawings, documents, data) through a controlled process. ISO 19650 defines four container states (Work in Progress, Shared, Published, Archived), plus naming, revision and status metadata that the CDE must enforce. These platforms sit between authoring tools such as Revit or Archicad and the site, client and operations teams, and they provide the audit trail that contracts and information protocols rely on.

Autodesk Construction Cloud (ACC) is Autodesk's unified cloud platform for design collaboration, document control and construction management. Its CDE is the Docs module (now Forma Data Management), which provides folder permissions, naming standards, reviews, transmittals and issues; Build adds RFIs, submittals, quality and cost; BIM Collaborate and BIM Collaborate Pro add model coordination and Revit cloud worksharing. In 2026 Autodesk placed ACC under the Autodesk Forma brand, so vendor pages now use names such as Forma Build and Forma for Model Coordination while the platform itself is unchanged. It is used by design firms, general contractors and owners, and it succeeded BIM 360.

BIM 360 was Autodesk's cloud construction platform, made up of BIM 360 Docs, Design, Coordinate, Build and the older Classic tools Glue, Field and Team. From 2021 its functions were re-released as Autodesk Docs, BIM Collaborate and Autodesk Build inside Autodesk Construction Cloud. Autodesk states there is no retirement date for the BIM 360 next-generation platform, but no new features are added and new projects should start on ACC/Forma. BIM 360 Glue reaches end of life on 31 July 2026.

Its Document Management product adds a governance layer with AI-assisted naming-convention validation, revision and status codes, review workflows and a tamper-evident audit trail, which lets contractors run an ISO 19650-style CDE inside Procore. It is priced on annual construction volume, so the number of users on a project does not change the fee. It is most common among general contractors and owners in North America, the UK, Australia and the Middle East.

Tips from our consultants
- Configure the naming standard before anyone uploads a file; retrofitting names on a live project is the most common CDE failure.
- Keep WIP inside each task team's own environment and let only checked containers into Shared; external users should never see WIP.
- Record the status code and revision as metadata, not in the file name, so the same container ID survives every revision.
- Test BCF round-trips early with real models from every discipline; GUID and origin problems surface then, not at the clash review.
- Check the certificate scope, not the logo: a BSI Kitemark covers the ISO 19650 framework, TÜV SÜD attestations cover the named parts, and buildingSMART certification covers IFC handling only.
- Export the audit trail at every stage gate and at handover; it is the evidence the appointing party will ask for in a dispute.
