A Common Data Environment (CDE) is the agreed single source of information for a project or asset, used to collect, manage and share every information container (models, drawings, documents, data) through a controlled process. ISO 19650 defines four container states (Work in Progress, Shared, Published, Archived), plus naming, revision and status metadata that the CDE must enforce. These platforms sit between authoring tools such as Revit or Archicad and the site, client and operations teams, and they provide the audit trail that contracts and information protocols rely on.

  • Configure the naming standard before anyone uploads a file; retrofitting names on a live project is the most common CDE failure.
  • Keep WIP inside each task team's own environment and let only checked containers into Shared; external users should never see WIP.
  • Record the status code and revision as metadata, not in the file name, so the same container ID survives every revision.
  • Test BCF round-trips early with real models from every discipline; GUID and origin problems surface then, not at the clash review.
  • Check the certificate scope, not the logo: a BSI Kitemark covers the ISO 19650 framework, TÜV SÜD attestations cover the named parts, and buildingSMART certification covers IFC handling only.
  • Export the audit trail at every stage gate and at handover; it is the evidence the appointing party will ask for in a dispute.
