🏗️ Structural BIM, Analysis & Steel/Concrete Detailing
Structural software covers three linked jobs in a BIM workflow: authoring the physical structural model (steel, concrete, timber), analysing and designing members and connections against building codes, and producing fabrication-level detailing such as shop drawings, CNC files and rebar schedules. The analytical model, the physical BIM model and the fabrication data are exchanged between tools through IFC, SAF, CIS/2, DSTV/NC and vendor-specific links. The category is dominated by Trimble Tekla, Autodesk (Revit, Robot, Advance Steel), Nemetschek brands (ALLPLAN, SDS2, RISA, SOFiSTiK), Bentley and specialist analysis vendors such as CSI, Dlubal and IDEA StatiCa.
Tekla Structures
Trimble (Tekla)Constructible multi-material structural BIM for steel and concrete detailing and fabrication.Structural BIM, Analysis & Steel/Concrete DetailingSubscriptionWindowsIFC ⇄
Tekla Structures is Trimble's structural BIM authoring and detailing platform. It models steel, precast and cast-in-place concrete, timber and other materials at LOD 400 fabrication detail, and generates general arrangement and shop drawings, reports, NC files and rebar schedules directly from the model. It is the dominant tool for steel detailers and precast producers, and is also used by structural engineers and contractors for coordination. Models are shared between teams through Tekla Model Sharing (a built-in feature, not a separate product) and Trimble Connect.

Tekla Structural Designer
Trimble (Tekla)Integrated multi-material building analysis and code-based design in one model.Structural BIM, Analysis & Steel/Concrete DetailingSubscriptionWindowsIFC ⇄
Tekla Structural Designer combines finite-element building analysis and automated member design for steel, concrete, timber and composite structures in a single model. It applies wind and gravity loading, runs analysis and designs members to Eurocode, US, British, Australian, Canadian and other codes, then produces reports and reinforcement drawings. Engineers use it for whole-building design and pass the physical model to Tekla Structures or Revit for detailing. The 2026 release adds integrated elastic-plastic portal frame design to Eurocode and a more accurate centre-of-rigidity calculation for seismic design.

Tekla PowerFab
Trimble (Tekla)Steel fabrication management: estimating, purchasing, inventory, production control and shipping.Structural BIM, Analysis & Steel/Concrete DetailingEnterprise quoteWindowsWeb (PowerFab Go)Mobile (PowerFab Go)
Tekla PowerFab is Trimble's management information system for structural steel fabricators. It covers estimating, project management, purchasing, inventory, nesting, production control, shop-floor tracking (PowerFab Go) and shipping in one database. Detailing data flows in from Tekla Structures, SDS/2 or Advance Steel so that fabricators can track every assembly from model to site. The 2026 release adds route validation that blocks shipment until manufacturing steps are complete, station-based task filtering in PowerFab Go, and recycled-content reporting for LEED.

Autodesk Revit (Structural discipline)
AutodeskMulti-discipline BIM authoring with structural framing, rebar, analytical model and steel connections.Structural BIM, Analysis & Steel/Concrete DetailingSubscriptionWindowsIFC ⇄
Revit is Autodesk's BIM authoring platform; its structural toolset models foundations, framing, walls, slabs, rebar and steel connections and maintains an analytical model for export to analysis software. Revit 2027 (released March 2026) consolidates concrete modelling into a dedicated Concrete tab, overhauls rebar numbering, calculates section properties automatically, tracks rebar mass and improves analytical panel splitting. Structural engineers use it for design-intent models coordinated with architecture and MEP, and pass models to Robot, ETABS, RFEM, Tekla Structural Designer or Advance Steel for analysis and detailing.

Autodesk Robot Structural Analysis Professional
AutodeskFE analysis and code design for buildings and structures with a native Revit link.Structural BIM, Analysis & Steel/Concrete DetailingSubscriptionWindowsIFC ⇄
Robot Structural Analysis Professional is Autodesk's finite element analysis and design package, descended from the French Robobat software acquired in 2008. It performs linear, nonlinear, dynamic, buckling and wind-simulation analyses and verifies steel, concrete and timber members to a wide range of international codes. Its main workflow strength is the bidirectional link with Revit's analytical model. The 2027 release adds steel design to NBR 8800:2024, CAN/CSA-S16-2024, French national amendments for Eurocode 3 and the Algerian RPA 2024 seismic code.

🏗️ Structural BIM: from model to analysis to fabrication
Estimated hours: 180For structural engineers, BIM modellers and detailers who want to run a complete structural BIM workflow. By the end, learners can author a coordinated structural model, exchange it with analysis and connection design tools, produce fabrication-level detailing in Tekla Structures, and automate repetitive steps with APIs and parametric links.Structural BIM ModelerSteel DetailerStructural EngineerBIM Coordinator
Prerequisites: Basic structural engineering or construction knowledge (members, loads, connections) · Comfort with 3D CAD navigation · Access to a Windows workstation with trial or education licences
Foundation
30 h- Explain the difference between authoring, analysis and detailing tools and where each fits in the structural workflow
- Identify the main vendors and products (Trimble Tekla, Autodesk Revit/Robot/Advance Steel, Nemetschek ALLPLAN/SDS2, Bentley STAAD/ProStructures, CSI, Dlubal, IDEA StatiCa)
- Recognise native and exchange formats: .db1, .rvt, .dwg, .edb, .rf6, .std, IFC, SAF, CIS/2, NC/DSTV, KISS

Tips from our consultants
- Agree the Tekla Structures version at project start; models saved in a newer version cannot be opened in an older one.
- Keep one source of truth per stage: design-intent model in Revit or ALLPLAN, detailing model in Tekla Structures, and freeze the analytical model before detailing begins.
- Test IFC export settings on a small model and validate property sets before issuing to the federated model.
- Use vendor links (Revit-Robot, CSiXRevit, TSD Integrator) for round-trips and IFC or SAF for one-way hand-offs to other vendors.
- Learn one API well (Tekla Open API or CSI OAPI) before spreading across tools; most automation value comes from reports and repetitive modelling.
